Quick question for the German speaking members...

What does Weimar(er) Ausgabe mean?

As in Luther Werke (Weimar Ausgabe), or Goethe Werke (Weimar Ausgabe)?

I've gathered that the ausgabe means something along the lines of "collected" or "gathered" or "distributed", but I can't find Weimar listed in any of the lexicons I've checked and Babelfish turns up nothing either, just spits the word out as-is.

Thanks,
Jordan

"Ausgabe" in this context is equivalent to "edition". Thus Weimarer Ausgabe specifies an edition of the works, which would be issued in Weimar. To know what exactly the Weimarer Ausgabe of Goethe or Luther is, you'd have to undertake some research.

Erm, missed the second part of your question:
Weimar is a town in eastern Germany, which has played an important role in german cultural history. Think Goethe, Schiller, Nietzsche, Liszt, Bauhaus movement, yada yada...:)

Aha...I guessed that it was a place since you said "in", but I just figured I was already supposed to know where it was so I didn't wanna look silly and ask hehe ;)

Thanks again for the informations, I kept seeing the phrase in citations in various readers and was wondering for some time what it meant.

Ps. They also know how to code nice looking pages in Weimar it appears ;D
