I liked the reply someone gave on Slashdot; mentioning that since the French do not have their own word for SPAM that it must now be referred to as

jambon épicé courriel

universalis

The word "courriel" actually comes from Québec, and here we've used it exclusively for years - it is only now that the French are starting to adopt it. Personally, I agree with this change, as the word courriel sounds better and is more descriptive in French than email.

As for spam, we use the word "pourriel" a contraction of courriel pourri - the word pourri meaning rotten!
