In good ol' Cleveland, the power is out, at least to my (office) building. UPS and generators holding strong, and the upstream links are still online, so all is well.

2 hungry cats. One howling loudly, the other one gently patting me on the cheek with her paw.

Usually when the power goes out, it wakes me up. Even when there's no UPS beeping. I'm not sure why.

mcavic, for years I've believed people can sense what their computers are doing a lot more than we are credited for - not sure - maybe through EM radiation, but I think more likely we get used to the high frequency sounds of parts of our PC working electronically.

i'm sure many people here will have been running some code which shouldn't give any visual output for a rather long time... and you just suddenly know that something's gone wrong ... despite the fact that the monitor shows nothing...

this was prevalent with older machines especially, remember the old Acorn machines? if your code hit an infinite loop you could hear the faint high pitched buzz change tone subtly... and the more you heard it, the more your ears got tuned into it...

or am i the only one with this experience?

Hmm I remember once I got really sick with some osrt of mutant flu, and I had a ****ty time getting to sleep. First I started unplugging clocks and radios in my room to get rid of the buzz that somehow was suddenly driving me nuts.

But the combined force of a gadzillion fans in my work machine was suddenly incredibly loud although it's two rooms down the hal around some corners and through two doors.

Couldn't sleep until I switch all the computers in the house off. Must've been the first night in years without any computers running.

When I walk in a room, I can instantly tell if any tvs or computer monitors are on "standby" mode, rather than being actually turned off. Sometimes it bothers me, sometimes it doesn't...

Denise Richards rolled over and gently nudged me because a scantly clad Sarah Michelle Gellar was bringing me breakfast in bed.

Then my landlords dogs started yapping and woke me up.

Sigh... :(

Usually my screaming crazy downstairs neighbour shouting at her pet rabbit at 6am...

I have since moved out and now my girlfriend wakes me up by punching me very hard and shouting: "get out of bed NOW you lazy <snip> or turn that stupid alarm off" after I've pressed snooze for the third time in thirty minutes....
