However.
You CANNOT fit an Olympics into NYC, and trying to do so would bankrupt the whole state. I KNOW it would. Buffalo, NY has just had to lay off 1,000 of its public school teachers because the state aid they needed to balance their budget went to NYC after Sept 11th. Belts are tight. There ain't money. We cannot afford an Olympics. State money would go in, and tourist money would roll right into NYC, but not the rest of the state.
And it wouldn't roll into the areas of NYC that need it the most. No... it would cost us all money, time, and hassle, and it wouldn't benefit those who need it most.
So I've been ignoring the whole issue because it would make me so angry to pay attention, but am glad to hear this news.
I've never been to Vancouver. I hear it's lovely. I'd love to go there someday.
Oh no! I'm being all glum. I didn't mean to start anything with this. I just want to say, I'm happy not just for Vancouver in all this.
everyone seems pretty excited that I have talked to so far. It will be interesting to watch the whole thing develop over the next 7 yrs, though who knows if I will be here.
It will be interesting to live in a pre olympic city, I have only lived in a post before and it left it's mark very effectively.
I was walking to work in downtown Vancouver, knowing the announcement was going to be any minute and trying frantically to get to a place where I could watch it live.
Just as I was passing a little clearing south of Canada Place; people on the streets errupted all around me in cheers. There were people screaming from the office buildings, and just about every car on the road honking in celebration.
It was a very cool experience, definately the highlight of my day.
Vancouver-Whistler won for the Winter Games in 2010, since Whistler is only 90 mins. away from the city to hold alpine & nordic events. that was about the furthest any venue was away from the heart of SLC - soldier hollow, snowbasin. to do a 'winter' in NYC isn't feasible - lake placid is just too far.
i believe NYC is still considering a SUMMER OLYMPICS bid
D'aw crap!
See, I should pay attention to this stuff just a little bit.
That's it, I'm moving to Vancouver. That'll solve my problems.
:-)
I was sure it was the 2010 they were talking about. Oh well...
