From [siliconvalley.com...] -

``Five or 10 years from now, we are going to look back at the current state of Web search and be embarrassed, like we are now when we look back at old technologies like Betamax VCRs and 8-track tapes,'' said Gary William Flake, Overture's chief science officer.

Doh! Unless he means to embarrassed when looking back at old technologies like Betamax VCRs because they were shunned in favor of the inferior VHS technology?

Is he insinuating that 5-10 years from now that if the consumer market adopts Overture we will be embarrassed at consumers choice of Overture over better technologies like Google :)? Similar to being embarrassed at having collectively picked VHS over betamax?

Of course he's really meaning DVD technology versus VCRs but still, betamax is a real bad example.

And I found it funny. So its foo.

Or he could mean TiVo.

Well, I'm 17 but have 3 Beta VCRs and I can attest to their solid workmanship and QUALITY over the crappy plastic VHS machines. I have a portable Beta that's older than me and still works like a charm. For saying that, his company deserves to go down! We love Beta!

Not a gaffe in the context of dvd versus betamax- or viewed in the context of DISCARDED TECHNOLOGIES.

Doesn't lessen the truth of his statement, which by the way was made last week, old news.

Actually, I read an article a couple months ago that more or less debunks the "betamax vs VHS" thing.

I looked in "site search," and I am sure that this is a rookie question, but what does FOO stand for.

Ugh! Just goes to show how STUPID people are if they choose quantity over quality. Beta IS better (who cares about product base when you've got something YOU can enjoy and share with a group of "elite" users!) , and there's no arguing about it. DVDs dub perfectly (Beta is immune to Macrovision, so you can copy allllllllll the rentals you want :)) ). Plus, what is this garbage I read about "that betamax tape is useless because it won't fit the entire movie on it?" The L-750 tape will last 3 hr in BII ("SP") mode. The L-830 lasts 3,5 hours! Now what movie won't fit in 3,5 hours of tape?!
