It was used to store sweet leech food, applied to the skin before the leeches. Acording to the website I am reading it could also have been used for ashes.

Sorry defanjos! I only glanced at your question before I replied. Not sure if the drug(s) are still legal today or not, but I don't believe this why it's no longer in use.

I found a site in swedish that appears to be the same item without the base. I tried running a translator on it, but not much luck... Here is what I got:

"Pill was shaking together with silverblad in an pillerfrsilvringsdosaö, like the picture, until they become jmntä överdragna with metal.
Same technique be able anvndasä frö frgyllningö of pill."

Something about pills in this container and shaking them together until they become overdrawn with metal?

It was used to store quicksilver, which was used for medication.

For those curious like I was:
Description: Pill silverers were used throughout the 18th and to the mid 19th centuries to coat pills with silver or gold. The pill was coated with a kind of syrup, placed inside the globe filled with silver or gold leaf, and shaken and spun until coated

Did it have a practical purpose or for aesthetics only?

Never mind, aesthetics only. It raised the price of the pills.

I think it was asthetic as from what I found most pills were coated with talcum powder and rolled in a bit of varnish (pearlized). Silver or gold leaf was considered the ultimate finish.
