It's quite a new word, early 20th c, from Greek - treiskaideka - 13.
So worrying about 13 is quite modern, I always thought it had something to do with the last supper - thirteen guests at the table before Jesus was crusified, or thirteen steps to the guillotine.
But why Friday? - we don't seem to worry about the other six days.
The 6th day of the week is traditionally bad news - execution (and crucifixion) day, apple-temptation day, and it's also a traditional pagan day of worship, so upstanding christian types have to hate it ;)

An aside - studies have shown that although less people drive on Friday 13th, there are actually a higher proportion of traffic accidents. And if you believe Friday 13th is unlucky, you are more likely to suffer bad luck...
