Surely one of you will know of a grass that will grown to a lovely and lush 4 inch height and stay there without constant nagging and the even less desireable mowing on my part, and survive our sometimes harsh winters.
I've given considerable thought to doing the whole yard in a nice southwestern sand motif. My housemate and the neighbors seem to thing that idea a trifle looney though. Apparently they think that sand is somehow out of place in such quantities here in the midwest........ I dunno, I just dunno.
Any helpfull ideas?

Yup. It's a lovely green, slow growing, soft to walk on bluegrass/Alaskan grass seed mix. If you want to fly up here to Fairbanks, Alaska, I'll take you down to the feed store where they sell it. :)
You also get the benefit of an automatic fertilizing and watering system at the same time. NOTE: DO NOT GET TOO MANY!
a) seedind some wild flower mix ;
b) spraying agent orange ;
will do.
I plant tomatoes. When I see "phone number X from a clueless client again" on the phone, I just leave out and take care of my tomatoes for a while.
This short time of relaxation gives me the drive to call back.
Jim W; Since my neighbors already refer to me as "the old goat", I'm not sure I want the competition.
Macguru; The city and I have had a prolonged "conversation" about the wildflowers. Turns out one persons wildflower is another persons weed. But that was one whole season I didn't need to mow, thanks to the cities appeal process. :)
The next year I nearly reached the "B" solution. One more quart of liquid "lawn care" chemicals and I think this place would have qualified for Superfund designation.
Ah well..........
