I had exactly the same thought when I read that but I was so intrigued with the thought of someone building a deadly Rube Goldberg house that I let it pass.
We have two mastiffs that are trained guard dogs. There's no need for me to say more than a word or two to them and they obey. I was told that if I told them to sit/stay they would die of starvation before moving from the spot they were in. I don't plan on testing that but I do know that they aren't "pets" when they are on guard and they become perfect pets when they are "at ease".
It sounds like the diamond importer's dogs are poorly trained attack dogs rather than well-trained guard dogs. Guard dogs strive to intimidate first. (prevent entry into the protected territory) If the perimeter is breached they are trained to immobilize and detain.
Personal protection dogs only threaten if the person they are protecting is attacked.
The sight of two 150lb+ mastiffs has proven to deter people that might want to see what I keep in the barn. They haven't kept the neighbor's kid from chucking apples at the horses or tossing his beer cans over the fence but he doesn't step over that fence.
I like the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch idea but the counting is complex... ;)
But seriously, any dog with a serious voice (as long as it shuts up when told to) should suffice for most intruders... unless -- like the diamond importer -- you've got stuff in your house likely to attract determined people with guns.
In that case I like the idea of having some kind of security system whereby an infrared trigger would somehow activate a system of hidden, motion-triggered stun guns... if you set the sensors/stun guns at the right height, you could theoretically set them up to only zap adult-human-height targets.
Just make sure all the hallways & doorways are really thoroughly covered... no need to blanket the place. hehehehe *ZAP*
ROFL Neither do I, that's why I have to have so many things to do. I only sleep about 2-4 hours a day and I need to switch tasks frequently. (that's why I can't work for someone else, there's no way I could stay cooped up in an office for an 8 hour stretch, let alone do the same thing 5 days in a row.)
I don't even have to worry about taking my keys out of the car
What about your car insurance? Will the company pay up, if
you don't keep your car locked?
There is an nice Soth-African caralarm. I couln't find it on the net but it has two built in flamethrowers (not a joke). I really, really would like one of those, but I guess South-Africa must be the only country in the world where it is legal...
The recovery rate on reported stolen vehicles is very high. ;)
If you are a US resident you could probably buy your way out of killing some one. See OJ [google.com]
I'd forgotten about Tony Martin, poor bloke all he did was to pop a no good sh1t for brains burglar -- like most people in the UK would like to do if they had any guts and the poor guy gets the slammer. I cannot believe the rest of the cr1p, it's the PC movement gone mad.

Damn that would be some serious stress busting.
