Dell has always been a favourite, has a lot of stuff for a price which is reasonable.

(BTW i am impressed by the response time :) )

I just went shopping for a laptop for my friend and we came up with a customized HP Pavilion ze4000 series notebook. I know 2 people who own them and they are very happy with them-- we decided on the HP because of the price vs value-- if money is not an option, then you've got way more choices ahead of you, but when we shopped with a budget in mind, this is what we came up with a few weeks ago after looking at Dell, Gateway, Compaq (yes I know HP and Compaq are the same), Sony, Toshiba and IBM.

Good luck!

If you are looking to get a basic ~7 pound laptop, pretty much any name brand vendor gives you the same thing -- they are starting to become a commodity item.

In the sub-5 pound market features, style, price vary a lot more and make buying a laptop more difficult. I just got a lightweight and went with the Fujitsu s-series.

Re: Gateway

ackk! I've dealt with several of them and found them to be a pain. Proprietary hardware and OS - same issues I've had with several other manufacturers. Haven't looked into anything from them recently though - they may have cleaned up their act.

I have a compaq n800c the coolest thing is the wireless card is built into the top of the case, it's really sweet, not like those clunky things dangling out of the side or back.

I have been shopping for a while too. It seems liek for the price you can get a toshiba with all the same features as the other brands PLUS a dvdrw

The other ones that catch the eye are the powerbooks, not sure if MAC is an option for you.

I've been hearing a lot about Intel's new Centrino platform, designed especially for mobile computing... A friend at lunch today told me about the new Sony Centrino machine for $2,000. Great performance, long battery life, very light machine....

There's a good overview of the Centrino in the May 27 PC Magazine (p94). I couldn't find that article online, but here's [pcmag.com] another. Apparently, the big drawback is that 802.11g wireless won't be supported until year's end.

>>What about Gateway...<<

Main virtue, according to local Gateway salesman I had a long talk with, is that their machines are very rugged.

If you need a very powerful laptop (ie desktop you can carry around) then I strongly recommend going with a Dell Inspiron - Have had mine for some 5 or 6 years and it is a great performer.

Also owned a compaq but it had to have two new motherboards and three new screens in a period of a year, perhaps a bad apple but it still put me off them for life.

I swear by Dell and all my future laptops will be the latest Dell Inspiron.

We had 4 Compaq laptops (can't recall the exact model) and all died for various reasons within 18 months. Local support here is nil so never again.

Currently the Fujitsu Lifebooks are very popular in Asia. We've had 5 over the past 3 years and they are all still working fine.

I must agree with ya'all that like Dell and HATE compaq. I have a Compaq laptop that I refer to as my craptop. I will never buy anything from Compaq/HP.
Dell machines are the best for the money and the support cannot be beat.

Go for Toshiba Satellite 2400 series. Weighs a ton but is a great performer. Excellent Harman Kardon speakers, great graphics card (nVidia GeForce4) and a bright screen.

Battery life is 3 hours for productivity work and winamp running in the background ;)

I have a Dell that I am happy with, but my daughter's college supplied IBM A30's to all the students. That thing really took a beating and kept on working. Very impressive.

I never had problems with Dell. I am now using my new Inspiron 8500, which, surprisingly enough for a new laptop, resulted to be very Linux friendly (Redhat 9.0), just in case you were interested.
