Yesterday I just got my first spam message in German. Now that will be a son-of-a-gun to filter...

I've been getting those for a while... I'd think it would be kinda hard to close a sale when the customer doesn't know what you're selling.

They're not selling anything. Most of the spam in german language pretends to give you notice of a video message they claim you have received. The URL to click goes to a free site in South America, and will attempt to install an expensive dialer on your system.

No legitimate business here can afford to send spam. They'd be sued to hell and back. What remains are those who think they have found a way to defraud people without the victims being able to trace them.

Well, Bird, I wonder how you'd call all the rest of unsolicited mail I'm getting from various german owned, operated, and located business...

Should be said though that at least 80% of spam in my inbox is english and originates from the US/UK.

My only experiance with german spam was (drum roll please) porn!

I took the content and ran it through a translator. Something to the affect that Helga saw me downtown and wanted a weinersnitzel.

Yeah, I assumed the ones with all the women's names in them were probably not *ahem* legitimate merchandise... but I didn't feel like dusting off the highschool german/english dictionary to decipher the rest.

give you notice of a video message

Now I have to wonder who's been leaving me video messages? Is it a long-lost rich uncle on his deathbed, trying to reach me before he rewrites his will? Is it the man of my dreams, trying to reach me before he reaches his deathbed? Is it Helga, with her strange weinerschnitzel obsession? Oooh... the curiosity kills me. :)

You know that you can have your lawyer send them a C&D at their cost, right? If they care to maintain the image of being legitimate businesses, they will give in very quickly. Because, unless you have already bought something from them, they're clearly breaking the law, and they're easy to prosecute.

Maybe I'm not representative, because I only run a handful of webpages in german language (and no .de domain), but only a few % of the spam I receive is in German. And of that, more than 90% are the dialer gangs. The small rest gets their ISP (at least) on their heels in a heartbeat. I'm just about to let the hounds loose on one of the largest german mail order houses, btw., because they've started sending newsletters to unverified addresses.

Now I have to wonder who's been leaving me video messages?

Oh, there are other variations as well. Some pretend to lead you to hidden solarium webcam feeds, others camouflage as a personal ad, or make it sound like some person is responding to a personal ad of yours. In the end, any spam in german language that has the slightest erotic undertone is almost certain to lead to a drive-by dialer download. The current telecommunication laws in Germany turn deceptive dialers into a goldmine, because it's almost impossible to track the operators of those numbers through a maze of resellers.

Unfortunately my web site includes major city names from around the world - I get spam in languages I can't even identify!
