Simply put, customers who tip get better service.
This holds true in bars that have a regular clientele. The dark bars where the drunks hang out. Making friends with your bartender gets you comps, a steady supply, huge pours, and afterhour privileges.
But there are many other bars that are weekend destinations and seem to hire bar tenders based on looks than for any bar tending abilities. Believe it or not, I've had bartenders ask me how to make a Martini. That's the main reason for slow bar service in the first place: Inept bar tenders. Leaving a big tip in these kinds of joints usually won't matter.
And forget getting a decent cocktail in New Mexico.
If you really want prompt service, stick to these guidelines:
- Tip. No bartender enjoys working for $5.00 an hour.
- Say please. request a drink, don't demand one.
- Say thank you. Common sense and something that is not said enough anymore.
- Have your money ready. It astonds me that people can walk up to a busy bar, order a drink, watch the bartender make it...and then root around in their pockets for 5 minutes trying to find change.
- Never..ever..order a drink just to impress the bartender. I wish I had a dollar for every idiot who would walk up to the bar and order a "slammin-piledriver-brain-wizzbang" or some other idiotic drink that they concocted in their basement last week. The best is when they give you that 'what?!, you don't know how to make that?' look..
You meet a lot of great people bartending, a lot of morons too. I like my new career much, much better.

He's in real estate now but still works 1 or 2 shifts a week for fun, the cash, and mostly the contacts. I can't belive how many people will let their bartender sell their house.
But then again they get free drinks for a while.... :)
I've been contempating hitting up the RE market. How hard can it be to SEO my way to the top, pick up easy clients and take my 3-6% of $300,000.. :) Those overpaid bastards..
I have to say "beered up kids with an agression problem."
is the best summary of british nightlife ive ever heard. Well done, again. :)
Being British I am ashamed of what we call the next generation. All the crap taked about in the papers about America this, America that. The US has good stuff like Garth Brooks, Honkey Tonks, Pick-up trucks, Cowboy Hats and sunshine.
I read in the Sunday times that UK streets are now more dangerous than those in the US...
Anyhow, I am getting off topic - LOL!
