These damn things popup about every 1/2 an hour and have done for long enough!

example [mysite.freeserve.com]

Can anybody tell me

A. is there a good reason to have this enabled? ie. can message my freinds somehow?

B. how the hell do I turn it off?

I would be very grateful for your responses

Thanks

Limbo

Sounds like you have spyware on your computer. Download and run AdAware. Or for an even more thorough cleaning try "SpyBot Search & Destroy."

Don't we have a messenger spam clean-up tutorial here? I think so. Try using ATW to search WebmasterWorld on this.

Limbo,
If you are tired of this M$ "feature" you can turn it off by going to:
Control Panel>>
Administrative Tools>>
Services>>
Scroll down to Messenger, double click it and in the "General Tab" under "Startup type" choose "Disabled"
It wont hurt any thing to turn this off.

No, adaware won't kill it. Conard's right, it's an exploit of an MS "feature."

My sister had the same problem. I found this:

Windows 2000/NT

Click Start->Programs->Administrative Tools->Services
Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Windows XP

Click Start->Control Panel
Click Performance and Maintenance
Click Administrative Tools
Double click Services
Scroll down and highlight "Messenger"
Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
Click the STOP button.
Select Disable or Manual in the Startup Type scroll bar
Click OK

Limbo,

I posted about this some time ago. Conard's suggestion will work. You need to switch off the messenger service.

Chris

<added: add LeClair's suggestion :) >>
