Now that Skiguide has been good enough to start a human mutilation thread, I finally feel comfortable in posting this link [newschannel9.com] about an event in my old home state... :)

*shudder* there was a case about 10 years ago of a logger working alone who got caught under a tree and had to amputate his leg *mid-thigh* with a pocket knife... cut through bone and all.

the resilience just astounds me.

I've always avoided hobbies that tended to cost an arm and a leg....this guy got off lucky!

rogerd, what does your story have to do with the rock climber story? You were just looking for an excuse to post that article!
It was funny though.

Do you think that guy had any feeling in his arm when he cut it off? I would be tempted to just fall asleep and die.

One of the best and certainly most inspirational books I have ever read was "Touching the Void" by Joe Simpson. He fell down a remote mountain in Argentina, breaking both legs. His friend (still tied to him) had to cut him free to survive himself. The story of his survival is amazing.
