Hi
my girlfriend just got a new laptop from work, with win xp and a built in microphone. it seems to have speech recognition built in, which took me by suprise. when i type a word doc it picks up any background noise, including tv's and printers, and translates it as 'of the head'. occasionslly i get a different word but normally its paragraphs just saying 'of the head of of the of the head' etc.

is this built into xp? has anyone experienced anything similar? and how do i get it to stop? ive looked around but
cannot see anything voice recognitony.

please help.
it does my head in.
thanks.

Yes! It's built in. There were stories of "haunted computers" when XP first released - spurious words and characters suddenly appeared when the keyboard wasn't touched. Apparently, in some configurations the voice software was on by default, and talking or noises caused the mysterious text.

Just speak at your machine: "Please turn off voice recognition" hehe
