ABCNEWS.com : Ninety Dead Tigers Found at Calif. Cat Rescue Home [abcnews.go.com]

...after discovering nearly 90 dead tigers and leopards at his home -- including 58 dead cubs stuffed into three freezers -- and piles of big cat pelts stacked in a storage barn.

I don't know what to say other than I feel terrible right now...

That's horrific... no punishment is harsh enough for those people.

It's sad that this sort of thing still happens in 'civilised' society.

Quite outrageous considering the numbers and species involved.

Is this punishable by life?

the have the guy and a woman arrested for endangering an 8-year old that was with them. This buys them more time to count all the animal cruelty problems that they can tack on to the charges.

So glad someone found out and they were taken into custody. Just so sad to treat any animal in this way.

I'd say the reason this kind of thing happens is because very rarely do the consequences amount to anything other than a fine. Many times, these same people either get their animals and kids back and go on to do the same thing for years and years. You'd be surprised how many of those that get "caught" have prior violations.

The "poor me" game is usually played to the hilt by the defendants, who either are assigned a public defender and cry and look remorseful in court, or they (who had no money to feed their animals or take care of their children) hire some sleazy attorney for real money to worm their way out of any hard conviction.

I've seen it happen so many times it makes me ill.

Society (at least in the US) hasn't gotten to the point where animals are considered "living" things. Society considers animal property and therefore the punishment for abusing them tends to be minimal.

For example, if an airline loses your beloved pet (like they do your luggage), they only have to reimburse you a hundred dollars or so, unless you can prove that the animal was pedigree, and then you get a bit more. But you can do nothing about the fact that they lost what to some people is like a child. Imagine if they only had to reimburse you a hundred dollars if they lost your child?!?!

It's too bad the society has not caught up with the mindset of the people who make up the society. I think most people here would agree that the lives of our pets and those poor cats are worth far more than a slap on the wrist.
