I've decided that if I'm going to be sitting for 75% of the day, I need to get a good chair. I'm looking to stay within a $200 budget (US). I've checked the usual suspects at the office supply stores. Nothing really jumps out at me. ANybody have any favorite brands/models?

Im not really a chair Guru but i prefer to have an arm chair at my desk. Although many in my office consider it a pain in the rear. With it being such a large chair in such a small space, but im comfortable and they're just jealous......... Just thought id share that.

In my old office building, there was a guy who made seats for expensive van conversions. These seats, usually of the leather "captain's chair" type, replace the normal seats supplied by Ford, GM, etc. Occasionally, he would end up with leftover seats due to a cancellation, color match problem, etc. He would mount a few of these unused seats on a high quality office chair base and sell them to acquaintances.

I bought one of these when I needed a new desk chair and have used it for about 5 years. It's far more comfortable and adjustable than a typical "executive" chair from OfficeMax, and was reasonably priced to boot. Very sturdy, too, since the seat must meet automotive standards.

To have arm rests or not to have arm rests is a question I have not answered, yet. I do most of my work on my laptop right now. But, I want to move back to my PC so, I will have to contend with with the ergonomics of all that.

Bad Luck chairs? Did Saddam use them? Or Enron?

The captain's chairs sound interesting. I had two family vans growing up and. the captain chairs were one of my favorite things about having a van (until I became a teenager). SOunds like they would be expensive, though. WHat's he charge?

If your looking for arms then i would opt for the arm chair, its in the name.

You might have to get your desk lifted a little bit and some coasters on the chair in order to win the battle between ergonomics and your PC, but at least you will be comfortable.

Besides arm chairs with wheels are cool.

Or... what about one of those inflatable charis with cup holders in them? you'll hvae to watch out for Spikey things tho...

Variety is the key.

You've probably come across people who are very protective about their chair, especially in open plan offices. You challenge them as to why they are so fussy about having the same chair, and they claim it is because of their bad back or something.

Have these people ever stopped to consider that they might have a bad back _because_ they sit in the same chair all the time?

Im protective over my chair, but that related to the fact i dont like other peoples bottoms being in a place were mine will rest later.

Personally I like a good old fashioned rocking chair. When not actually typing you can lean back, rock, and think. :-)

OfficeMax has a furniture department in some of their stores called FurnitureMax....

They constantly have $300 retail display models marked down for clearance between $100 - 150..

I recently picked up a nice high back fabric for $119...

Everyone has different opinions on chairs, my suggestion is to go to a store like this, and spend some time sitting in a variety.. What you like, isn't necessarily going to be what the "status quo" thinks is the best...

We had a saying in the car business, "There is an ass for every seat".... Same goes for chairs..

Mike12345,

Just leave this cushion [flatulence-filter.com] on your chair when you take a break.

Thanks for this bookmark lawman!

I got a chair that probably cost $300 for $75 at a used office furniture warehouse. I recommend finding the nearest one; there can be some gems in there.

Good tips Grifter and Redzone.

Any name brands (already have one brand from 7 posts up)that people would recommend? My luck, I'll find a nice squishy one that I like and, it turns out to be a POS brand that breaks a year and a half later. This would especially byte if I get it at a discount store with a limited warantee/guarantee.

Mike12345,

Never underestimate the power of your immune system. The more crap you feed it the more crap it will save you from.

Looking for good prices, well first off check out the office max/depot stores like said earlier but check out the web for coupons online or your flyers when you sign up for their info. So you can get 10-30.00 additional off the cost depending.

dmorison, I could not agree more. Can you convince my GF? She is a bit maniac on this issue. :)

I live in Montréal, Québec. Our culture is a mix of 300 years old French and current north american advertising influence.

We feed on Morbier [fromage-morbier.com] to enfocre our immune system against the most vicious biological attacks, and shoot up CheezWizz to survive ketchup gas.

We are prepared, and well seated. ;)

LOL!

"The more crap you feed it the more crap it will save you from." - Reminds me of my friend who just got back thailand, he spent £4,500 on beer.

He said "the liver is a bad thing and deserves to be punnished"

I dont mind eating crap and smoking and drinking too much, its just other peoples dead skin and diseases i get paranoid about!

So much so im considering wandering around the office in one of these [army-technology.com]

That's gotta be the SWEETEST pattern I've seen on a chair, yet. It even matches the wallpaper in my double-wide. Thanks for the find! ;0

Boy- Those fuzzy, off-grey jpgs sure do sell an item. Don't know why the big etailers don't take notice.

You could always put a rolling base on one of these [isringhausen.de].

Don't forget to hook it up to an air compressor, though.
