I use a HP desktp computer, it is about 8 months old. This morning I turned it on and there was no screen activity. The monitor power light remained orange, as oposed to going green when the base unit is turned on. I had a quick look insite to make sure th evidoe card was seated prperly and was making good contact with the motherboard. I also took the ram out and re-fited. When i turned it on again i was still gettig no signal and a beep, bee, beep, beep about a second break between the beeps and it just kept on going. I opened the box again and double checked the sim. It may not have been placed in correctly because when i started the computer again there was no beeping but still no activity at the monitor.

any ideas.

Anything in your manual about BIOS beeps? Alternatively, if you know the maker of your BIOS - Award? - then you can check their site. Make a note of the beep pattern - is the length of the beeps and the gap between them identical?

I've never known it to be anything other than the Video Card, that said.

I think the beep problem was because I didnt insert the ram propery. I double checked it and the beep soud stoped. Im back to the origional problem of nothing on screen.

I assume you have checked that the cables to the screen are properly connected everywhere.
  • If you have an extension video cable try without it.
  • Try another screen or try the screen on another computer.
  • Check that the video card is properly seated.
  • If the problem still persists then try another video card.

tried all of the above, no joy :-(

Called HP. Still covered by their warranty so they are going to call during the week to arange pick up and repar. I guess the process wont be to fast, few weeks or so.

Now all I need to do is get a winmodem to work on a linux machine and I will be back online. (curently using a friends machine) I have been reading up on this and it sounds possible using some binaries I have downloaded, does anyone have any experience of this?

    Thanks again for your replies.

Remove the added ram, and check if it works then. So the problem can be isolated.
Do you require 2 banks to be added? Some motherboards only accept 2 memory-bank adding at a time, not 1.

    <added> ok, i see i totally misread.
Remove all cards and only put in the essential cards. See if it works. Then keep adding cards until the error occurs again, andyou know what card it was that madethe error
    </added>

Mine does the same exact thing... however if I turn it off and back on it will boot correctly. Rarely I have to do this more than once. I take it your system is locking up at boot?

    Totaly locking up...
The system apears to start off ok but with no signal send to screen. On my monitor it does nothing, I tried it with a friends monitor and that screen gave an error message, check pc and cable connections. I also just realised that teh boot up sound (noise xp makes when booted) is not happening, so I guess the system is hanging before it boots. I was thinking along the lines of video card, but if it is not beeting even without graphics then it must be something else.

You probably already tried this, but here it goes:
    - shut power off
    - open your computer
    - ground yourself by touching the metal case
    - reseat every single board
    - reseat/redo every connector (power, motherboard, etc.)
    - make sure no wires are coming off the connectors
    - redo every connection on the back of the computer

It almost sounds like you have a power supply problem, but of course with electronics, it can be almost anything.

    Good luck
