I needed to install the java runtime environment for a particular piece of software I'm using. I've installed it previously, but i'm running a clean install of windows and so need it again. I'd prefer not to because it's always been trouble in the past.

20 minutes (!) into the installation and all I have is a screen saying 'installing java plugin' which is showing no signs of going away.

Why do people who make popular (and often required by other programs) software so buggy? Sun Java is second only to Adobe Acrobat Reader in the nightmare-to-install stakes. (Last time I tried to install Acrobat it took me nearly 2 hours and several timeouts before I got it over a 2mb cable connection.)

So now i'm going to have to ctrl-alt-del the java installation, and end up with shoddy half installed software and temp files all over my PC. Even when I DO manage to install it, I still have to put up with that annoying icon in the systray whenever I view java-enabled pages.

Grrrr...

that's odd ..... i've never had trouble installing either acrobat reader or the java runtime environment

having said that, i have actually removed the java runtime files because it's so slow. i keep getting prompted to re-install an earlier version but i'm so fed up with java that i really can't be bothered with it any more.
