I saw the reference to this article [seattletimes.nwsource.com] in this weeks NTK [ntk.net], in reference to the new Windows file system in Longhorn (the codename for the next version of windows)-- they compare the file system's search capabilities to Google in the article...

But (MS VP of Windows) Allchin bristled at the comparison. "Google's a very nice system, but compared to my vision, it's pathetic," he said.

To which NTK countered "(he had) one of those 'if you could index the URLs I've seen with my eyes' moments" - ahhaha and then they used [news.google.com ] to link to the article.. classic stuff.

He then went on to say:

"Whether it's Google or any of the other search engines, the amount of random stuff you get back is pretty overwhelming," he said. "But if you knew a little bit about me for example, I love music so when I'm searching for 'strings,' you know they should know this guy's probably thinking about guitars."

Obviously he's spent too much time searching through MSN's search and not enough time tinkering in Google-- but he brings up an interesting point-- using user profile/marketing information to give more relevant search results.. I'm sure Google has toyed with that idea before-- ie each persons search has different results-- but I think thats wussing out, the best technology wouldn't need to customize for each person, it would just know what the person meant in the first place, even if the search engine is only meeting that person for the first time.

Just thought I'd share :).

(EDIT)Tweaked NTK url(/EDIT)

It's not quite that big of a diss. After all, even Sergey and Larry diss themselves that they are not where their vision tells them they should be.

In light of that I agree with you- but I don't know if Mr. Allchin meant it that way :)... Even still, I just thought it was funny the way NTK linked to the news article, through google :)

But his theory wouldn't work all that often.

I love music and I program. When I search for strings, guess which I'm always referring too?
