John Edwards - host of "Crossing Over with John Edwards" claims he can speak to the dead when all he is really doing is what's called a "Cold reading"

A cold reading is "taking guesses"...

For example: He will go "What's the S connection I'm seeing here? Who in your family's name is "S" like Steve, Sam, Shirley?"

And the person will likely go "My cousins name is Stacey!" or something like that.

Think about it... Do you not have someone in your family that's name doesn't have an "S"?

What's worst of all, is that he gives people false hopes, and makes money praying off vulnerable people who really think they're talking to "passed" family members.

It's all a big scam. And he is nothing more than a scam artist.

Also: The show is HIGHLY EDITED... Past audience members have said, they edited down a 20 minute reading, so you only see about 5 minutes of it.

The 5 minutes you do see are obviously his lucky guesses. They edit out his "misses".

Just because one psychic, or even ten psychics, are frauds doesn't mean they are ALL frauds.

If I judged all Brits by Dame Edna what conclusions do you imagine I would have about British men?

I don't believe in psychics myself but for the sake of intellectual curiosity I like to keep the door a little open.

Ummm... is this show a big phenomenon somewhere? Because really, that ploy has been used for centuries by various people, and everyone of them was probably denounced as a fraud repeatedly througout their careers... but it never stopped people who wanted to believe it from getting sucked in.

No offense, but I doubt a thread in FOO is going to protect any credulous souls from it nowadays... ;)

Dame Edna (or Barry Humphries) is not a Brit

He's an Aussie

(not that it makes any difference)

Well, you'd like to think that explains a lot then, wouldn't you? But what about those Python fellows? They ran around in women's clothing all the time, and AFAIK, they were Brits. ;)

Need more convincing? "Crossing over with John Edwards" audience members have to sign a contract stating they wont talk about anything they viewed in the show...

John Edwards was on the Larry King show on CNN recently and had many "misses" and a few "lucky guesses"... The transcript of the show is a great read.

This one I'm not sure about, but I bet he reads books called "How to be a psychic" and "How to do cold readings" lol.

Good one Mivox! :)

I think that may be the start of another Foo thread, a list of famous Brits and near-Brits who are known for appearing in drag.

Benny Hill was hilarious.

Oh yeah, if psychic's are really real... Why do they have to ask "What's your name?" hehe ;)

And if people are really "coming through" to John Edward, would they till him things like "I'm a family member who's name begins with "S".

martinibuster...

Dame Edna is actually Australian... but we'd prefer it if the Brits kept him (sorry... her)

OK... covered already. Didn't read all the posts.

"..even ten psychics, are frauds doesn't mean they are ALL frauds."

Uhm, yes it does.

There has yet to be a scientifically verified one, in hundreds of years of trying.

I have only one thought on psychics ... If Dionne Warwick's "Psychic Friends" really were psychics or friends, ya just have to wonder why, back when she was still sining full-time, none of them rang her up and said "girl, you gotta invest wisely! If you don't, when your career tanks, and it will, you'll end up being a shill on some infomercials we're planning."

Ok, two thoughts actually ... if psychics are so good, why don't they just call up the folks who are thinking about calling them instead of spending ad dollars urging folks to call Miss Celo.

lawman,
I am going to enter the Randi challenge.
I have proven psychic ability.
For instance, even though you and I have never met,I have reached out into the ether and my spirit guides are telling me you are a man of the law.
Further, I sense that you work somewhere in the Southern states...
Let me see if I can be more specific...
Sorry to say this but I sense a criminal connection...
I'm probably wrong but I feel that the words Atlanta, Athens, Savannah, Brunswick, St. Simons Island and Valdosta are important.
The curtains are closing now...fading, fading, fading...
Where do I pick up the million bucks?

I put my faith in people I can trust . . . David Blaine

funnily enough i got the david blaine book for xmas (uk edition but surely published in the usa as well) -

it has a potted history of magic/performance including psycic tricks and suggestion, and it is a very interesting read.

here's an example of magic and autosuggestion:

think of a card, any card, but not the ace of spades because it's too obvious.

answer below,

ok maybe doesn't work for everyone but you'd be amazed

at how often it does
