Wow!

The article doesn't make it clear, though.

Was the victim actually involved in this stuff, or was he simply killed because he is a member of the Nigerian government, much the same as many of the spam/scammers claim to be?

As it turns out the victim "Michael Lekara Wayid" was one of very few Nigerian diplomats who
was cooperating with investigators and because of it he was not very
popular among many officials in Nigeria.
A contact from an office right across the street in Prague told me "The man who killed the Nigerian
consul was a medical doctor. He was not trapped by the scammers as
easily as by one of these scam letters. He actually knew the African
environment very well, worked there several years, and invested into a
seriously looking business that was warranted by the Nigerian government
many years ago (back in 80's I believe). Then the government fell and he
tried to get his investment back. Here it became to be a real scam -
they were pulling more and more money from him. When he killed the
diplomat, they have stolen him of $500K."
