Last week i was working with a friend on a new software project. Before we started our daily work i snooped around at his desc and found a recent promo brochure of a big ('guess the biggest) german hosting company. They target private wanna be webmasters as well as small to medium sized companies. One of these "get your own ecommerce site for 1 EURO and start making money" ISPs ...

Following the typical german teaching manner they had a fat headline at the title of this brochure: "Link Popularity - 6 Steps to your Success".

After a portion of blah blah ... "how important the Popularität of one's site is (profis call it Link Popularity)", that "all major se's like google and yahoo (LOL) rank pages just because of their Link Popularität" etc. etc., they offered their "secret" 6 steps to success:

- Search for other sites within your theme (wow)
- eMail the webmasters and ask them to link exchange with you.
- If they refuse to link to you because you don't have valuable content, build some. It doesn't matter what you offer at your site as long as other webmasters think it's valuable to link to - free downloads, free content, (free garbage) ...
- Join forums and post your link if someone asks for infos that can be found at your site. Don't use forums for self promo only - but if your site fits into a thread's theme, post a link to it whenever possible.
- Joining a forum is great in building relationships. Don't hesitate to send private messages to the other forum members to direct them to your page. They'll apreciate your promo since they joined the forum to meet other people and to share their interests.

A few days later i came across a site within my theme that now offers link exchange: "today Link Popularität is sooo important blah blah ... your site will get a boost if you add a 600x100 pixel banner link to us and receive a text link back to your site (allthough their site is a PR 2 commercial site)."

Phhh ... i sometimes hate the germans. Hey, i've got the right to say this since i'm german ;)

Is it the same in other countries? Is page rank allready gone sooo main stream?

hi yidaki,

i think this all started in germany because of a bigger feature in a widley known german computer magazine talking about 'tricking' und tuning your site for google.

anyway i think linkpopularity isn't mainstream only because a big german hosting company puts it into it's commercials at all. this text you're talking about is just a collection of some more or less good advices for some people to feel important.
