Microsoft issues critical IE Patch

MS has released a combined patch for IE [microsoft.com]

This fixes the "trace" bug that exposed your entire set of cookies to any website that wanted them.

Please run this patch and then update your WebmasterWorld password. Then update all your passwords on all sites that use cookies - there were active exploits running around IRC last week and a few websites were known to be running them.

An easier way to do this and make sure that you have all patches installed is to go to...

Start > Windows Update

That way you'll get the above patch and any others that your system is in need of.

I've got my Windows Update set to check each time I start up which is at least once a day.

Or keep checking for downloads to www.windowsupdate.com

Your PC gets scanned for updates you don't have and they allows you to download them.

I don't trust the auto Window's Update so it's a manual check for me.

It's just a matter of time before the auto check feature will be compromised and exploited by hackers.

I recently discovered that changing my browser User Agent prevents me from using windowsupdate.com, after altering the relevant OS specific items in the registry.

Seriously, what did you change to... and why?

It was altered, partly, to 'anonymize' details given out. Mainly though, it was changed because I can.

It is only a 10-second job to re-Microsoft myself, when I need to update, and then a 2 second job to disappear again once that's completed.
