Someone suggested we put up a geek personals forum. At first I laughed, and then I started checking around about them. The old personals sites are really taking off.

The title got me on that one, wasn't sure if the format of it or the fact that I understood it right away was funnier.

ahhh, internet dating, what better way to meet a stranger ;)

I actually know people who have met this way, kinda freaks me out really.

I've heard about people meeting online and having successful relationships... but going to an actual personals site? The one person I know who's set up online personal ads does nothing but complain about what lunatics she always seems to meet through them...

A friend of mine met a girl on one of the online services and they sent emails back and forth for a few months. He then applied to be on the Amazing Race reality show under the premise that he and this girl wanted to be on together to get to know each other and see if anything would come of it. The Amazing Race accepted them to be on the show but the girl backed out.

Actually, I am one of those freaky people, who met their significant other on the net. I was living in Germany at the time (6 years ago) and through the chat room I met my present husband, whith whom I by the way am very happy and have a 2 year old daughter! :)

Now that's what I call and extreme export ;) Nice going.

I think it is actually bigger over in Europe than it is here.

That could be. Once I got over here (US) everyone seemed so shocked, so you must be right. :0

Europe is massive, but still think its a lot bigger in the USA though.

================
Yahoo has found that personal ads accompanied by a digital photo generated eight times the number of responses than ads with just text, said Samantha Lazear, a senior product manager.
================

hmm, interesting. although I could have told them this, based on my staff surfing these sites and NEVER looking at an AD unless it has a picture.

Yes it does. Sure don't want to link to any bad neighborhoods! ;)

Good heavens, would you want to link to an entire neighborhood at all, no matter how good it was?

I think very limited reciprocal linkage is the best idea here...

Yes, I wonder what would happen if you got PR0'd. Imagine if dating were soley based on PR. Cloaking would be rampant! ;)

Cloaking would be rampant!

So would masking and spoofing and, well, let's not forget the proverbial re-direct! My God! The humanities!

It's not the size of the PR, but how long it stays in Goggle. Everyone knows that. <Sheese>

New pickup line

Shouldn't that be new pickup keyphrase?

Anyway "hey babe, wanna take a look at my meta tags" has always worked for me. okay so it hasn't really, and the online dating hasn't exactly been a huge success but it has been interesting :)

Well, if you can show a strong set of links and a well developed PR, wouldn't you want to FLASH it?

Is anybody doing a line in virtual overcoats?

So if cloaking is something along the lines of padded undergarments, would content spamming be roughly equivalent to plastic surgery, or would impants be more like hidden text?

Okay, back to the seriousness of it all. Brett, I think a personals forum for webmasters is a brilliant idea. It may sound far fetched, but I think geeks tend to flock together. I could see myself participating at geekypersonals.com or something like that.

mivox, you are just too much! ;)

Okay, who is going to moderate the personals?

There's a classic 1997 (pre PR) piece by Phil Greenspun
Using the Internet to Pick up Babes and/or Hunks [philip.greenspun.com] that's rather entertaining.

I think a personals forum for webmasters is a brilliant idea.

As long as it's behind the pay or no-view wall, sure. Seems as though 'recent posts' gets cluttered enough as it is without adding this to the mix.

Then again, he'll do as he sees fit. :)
