I'm afraid clues will be few and far between since they might tend to lead you in the wrong direction rather than help you.

offtopic: how can you makethat google image search will show more than 20 results on one page?

my first guess was some kind of whistle (lower loeft part looks liek this ) but you said that it doesnt produce sound so that rules whislt out i guess.
