Green Smiley?

Am I the only one not a fan of the green smiley?

I didn't even know there were 2 other options besides smiley and wink, just clicked the style codes..let's try it:

;)
wink

:)
smile

:o
shocked

:(
sad

OK, so can we please get another color for that smile? the wink ;) looks more like a smile :) to me than the :) smile.

Anyone else feel the same?

Personally I think there should be more smilies available. ;)

There should be a santa for x-mas.

andreas, that's some list of emoticons!

On a more serious note I actually like the way that there is only a handful of emoticons here at WebmasterWorld. Too many can leave pages littered with all sorts of smileys, ultimately detracting from the forum and, IMHO, taking from the weight of the content and message and cheapening the page.

:) :( :o ;)

I think green smiley :) should be a slighly lighter shade of green.

Looks too sad just now... :(

I agree with BlobFisk. To many becomes confusing. I would only add 2. Mad and indeferent. I have seen forums overrun by people using smilies. I think each forum should have their base smilies that are unique. Thats why I like the green smilie. It is unique to WebmasterWorld.

You need to be at least a Junior Member to be allowed to start a smiley thread.

The :) smiley is ugly. It's more a sick smiley than a smile smiley ;-)

Also, smileys like with nose ;-) should be converted ;)

Does anyone like the Google Toolbar smilies?

we would need CONFUSED smiley.

and what is defintelly needed is possibilty to CLICK on style codes. for example i dont quote most of posts since it is jsut totlaly waste of time to write those [quote] etc(not to mention thatwhen i press ALT GR and G it transefers my cursor into google toolbar url field!). one of the slovenian forums i participate has the best solution: you write text, select it with mouse and just click QUOTE button and the text is automatically quoted(that is code is added at start/end of text).

On the topic of smilies, has it ever occurred to you that the smiley codes are too egocentric? They only show my emotions. They don't reflect your emotions, you being the reader of this text. Well, maybe it would be presumptuous to think that a smiley can reflect your emotions but at least it can still convey what I think your emotions should be.

I have noticed that people sometimes make a second post in the same thread just because they wanted to make clear that the first post was not taken the wrong way. That is one example of where more elaborate smilies could be used to better emphasize the intentions in a post.

Since i haven't heard of smilies making this distinction before I'm going to suggest an extension of the smiley alphabet. What about the following:

I smile = :-)

You smile = U-)

I frown = :-(

You frown = U-(

We smile = U:-)

We frown = U:-(

Icons anyone?

Not sure whether I will continue to post here under those circumstances. ;) U;-) ;)

Or I really need to invest some time in expanding my little proxy server which currently only changes Aaron to Nick.

All of you who want more smileys could run it locally. It would translate all the smiley codes we could think of into graphics before pages are displayed in your browser.

Those who do not use it will only see lots of :-)U-):-(U-(U:-)U:-(/santa//ac//moz//googly/U-):-(U-(U:-)U:-([wc] ;)

Well, if the smiley convention ever does get called, here's my vote... ;)

I wholeheartedly agree on the following points:

  • No additional smileys. The forums I've seen with too many come across as being quite unprofessional imrho. (same goes for avatars)

  • Down with the green smiley! If not a color change, then at least a lighter shade would be an improvement. Personally, I think it should be yellow except on St. Patricks day when it could be a pretty shade of tippler green.

  • Style code buttons would be a huge improvement.
In the meantime I've got common codes hot keyed.

I started a thread the day about a bottom smiley, but strangly it got removed ASAP cant imagine why?

You set off the WebmasterWorld Poor Tact Filter.
Obviously I hacked a workaround for that algo long ago. <g>

I think I need to make a hot key for "what Dante said" :)

Mike12345 - I think you got the wrong end of the stick - I have a friend who is a hospital technician specialising in mammograms... she signs all her emails off with that emoticon :)

She must be right.. she's a medikul perfeshunal
