The next release of Microsoft Office will only work on Windows XP and on Windows 2000 operating systems that have Service Pack 3 installed, the software vendor has acknowledged, citing security and compatibility issues with older systems.

Microsoft could shift its plans if it receives overwhelming feedback from customers

MS Press Release 2005:

MS-TimeWarner-Google-Yahoo announced today that its new version of IE and Office will only work on its new operating system Doorways XZ. A spokesman said that Windows Xx was potentially insecure and was getting old anyway. He also said that 90% of users didn't actually own their own copy of Xx anyway but rented it at per minute rates, so it was a non-issue...
