Unless he is an alcoholic, he needs to order a beer - after all, you're in a Pub.
If you don't have a very good reason for ordering a beer, then you're not part of the brotherhood. It's that simple. If you're not up for a beer, don't go to the Pub in the first place.
That my friends is a Man Law.
And that my friend, is the sort of BS that real men should not put up with. Sounds to me like a bunch of middle-school girly boys trying their best to fit in. I can't imagine any one of my friends insisting that I *must* drink a beer. It's quite likely that continued insistence by any one of them would result in one of them picking up his teeth.
Then again, I've never been much for following any law that I don't think makes sense. Sheeple...
Now, with all that said, if I'm in a pub, you can bet there'll be a drink in my hand.

Hey, I've been outside of my cave more in the last two months than I have been in the last two years. I've even been in some social settings. I'll buy you a drink in Vegas, but I won't insist that you have to drink it. ;)
In some exceptional circumstances (eg near death experience, inadvertently becoming a parent, sudden drop in Google rankings, etc) it may be acceptable to drink a cup of tea in a pub when offered by the landlord/lady in response to aforesaid exceptional circumstances.
Ideally, a packet of pork scratchings should also be purchased to avoid any confusion.
Drink what you want, but go to a specialist for real tea.
Only girly boys whine about what some man cares to order.
They'll be insisting that we drink ten shots of Chocolate Sambuca in thirty seconds next ;)

The question is NOT what you'd choose to do, it has to do with "Man Law." I used to think the way you do - but it was pointed out to me that this is wrong, and I now believe it too. It's not about being tough enough to make your own decisions, it's about being tough enough give up what you really want to be a part of the brotherhood.
Drinking beer together is a ritual. You are doing something together and that sends a very positive signal to everyone at the table.
If you want to be different, go ahead. Just realize that by doing this you are separating yourself from the brotherhood.
And so it is a Man Law.
I know the DD laws are not so strict in some US states but they are strict here where there is an automatic ban if you are over the limit. That is why you will often see the driver in the company drinking tea, coffee, coke, soda water and lime juice or whatever :)
Any 'brotherhood' in which simply sharing an alcoholic beverage serves as the sole price of entry, leaves a lot to be desired. Anyone familiar with the term 'bar friends'?
