"The Great Gig in the Sky"
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon - 1973
I can't think of another tune that even comes close. The keyboard (piano) is enchanting, the rhythm blends well, and the vocals are simply awesome (thank you Claire for working on Sunday). Originally titled, "The Mortality Sequence", were it my song I would have called it "The Great Orgasm". Of course, that might not have got past the censors of the early 70's.
Help me out, is there another rock tune that fits this category?
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon - 1973
Grandpa got me all in the mood to listen to it, but alas, it is at work and I am at home. Am now settling for The Wall.
Another great Pink Floyd song (off the Wish You Were Here album) includes these lyrics that I love:
You're gonna go far, you're gonna fly high,
You're never gonna die, you're gonna make it if you try; they're gonna love you.
Well I've always had a deep respect, and I mean that most sincerely.
The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think.
Oh by the way, which one's Pink?
Little Green Bag - George Baker (for some reason it just makes me instantly happy!)
Bobby McGee - Janis Joplin (she was really somethin' - love her stuff)
Under the Boardwalk - The Drifters (a great "feel good" song)
Mustang Sally - Andrew Strong (again, just makes me feel good)
Macarena - Los del Rio (I love the primal beat!)
Unchained Melody - Gene Pitney (I just love this song by almost any artist who has recorded it. It is "the" love song of all time)
Bad to the Bone - George Thorogood (its just fun!)
Jump in de line - Harry Belafonte (hey, I live in de Caribbean and if anyone knows what Caribbean dancing is like ... you gotta love this song. It tells it like it is!)
Three Little Birds - Bob Marley (Happy music)
You Don't Own Me - Lesley Gore (One of the first songs to empower women)
Johhny Be Good - The Coasters (one of the best dance songs ever!)
The Lion Sleeps Tonight - The Tokens (I just like it.)
Don't worry, Be Happy - Bobby McFerrin (I used to hate this song ... but I changed my mind and now I love it.
Puttin' on the Ritz - Taco (Just a funny song done with great style!)
Kokomo - The Beach Boys
Orinoco Flow - Enya
Almost anything by Peter Paul & Mary, The Mamas and the Papas, Elvis and many others.
And another fave - I can't finish a glass without getting groggy or falling asleep but the best ever rock/blues drinking song ever recorded is "One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer" by George Thorogood.

Grandpa, have you ever listened to "From the Beginning" by Emerson Lake & Palmer?
Lots of nice music listed above. Instant memories and gratification.
I might add, though it's not quite "rock":
"The Lee Shore" Crosby Stills & Nash
All along the lee shore
shells lie scattered in the sand,
winking up like shining eyes at me,
from the seaFrom here to Venezuela nothing more to see,
than a hundred thousand islands
flung like jewels upon the sea
for you and me
Of course, there's a certain analogous elegance to the sentiments expressed in:
"Hit me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar :)
"The Great Gig in the Sky"
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon - 1973
Apparently they put the vocals together from numerous takes, using the best bits from each one. They certainly don't make music that good anymore.
For "most beautiful song" I'd have to go with tracks like Angie (Stones), maybe Onward (Yes), Please Don't Ask (Genesis), Here, There & Everywhere (Beatles), Waterfalls (Paul McCartney) etc....
It depends how you define "beautiful". There's an instrumental on Jon Anderson's debut solo album which is the most peaceful piece of music you could wish for.
If you mean a love song about a woman, well the list is endless...
Any Van Morrison fans?
One of my favorite songs is And It Stoned Me
"Dark Side of the Moon" and "Moon Dance" - The first two albums I ever owned were given to me as a Christmas present from my brother.
there must be a santana song that fits, can't remember the name off the top of my head
"Yellow Moon" - Neville Brothers
"Virginia Avenue" - Tom Waits
And many more ... but I am at work, and if I start playing too many of these songs in my head, it will take too long to get my mind back into gear. <note type="mental" value="assess priorities" />
