What is the purpose of these cucumber bumps anyway?

If you pick a cuke fresh from the garden, you'll notice tiny white, rubbery thorns protruding from the 'bumps'. If you rub your hand over the 'thorns' they fall off easily. So when you pick up your cukes at the grocery store, the bumps are still there, but the 'thorns' are gone.
<added /> My guess for the reason the thorns are there? To make the vegetable seem less appealing to birds and other critters that are looking for a quick snack.
