By nature many webmasters are quiet people who have an intense awareness of the flow of thought and interaction throughout all parts of their work and their surroundings. A cold detachment doesn't normally attract you to this kind of work, nor does an all-singing, all-dancing brash nature.
Perhaps that is what is why we cling to expressions of the natural world and our surroundings in our terminology and approach. Here are some examples:
Organic Search - could have been 'standard' or 'free'
Natural Traffic - why not 'traffic from links'
Backbone - not central link or supercorridor
Traffic Growth - c.f. Traffic Increase
Streaming Media - not viewing on-the-fly
Web-site - not web-portfolio - a physical location
Building - not creating or engineering
I admit some of those may be a little weak - but I wonder how many are in agreement that we are somehow striving for a closer link with the natural world around us from the comfort of our keyboards.
I totally agree, my keyboard is a source of money, my land is a source of enjoyment! Never should they cross!
At 5:00pm, (on the dot, or earlier), I grab a beer and walk down to my dock (rain or shine). At that time I see birds of prey hunting overhead, Manatees swimming harmlessly below, and occasionally the odd gator who fancies his chances before dusk!
Several water snakes, crabs, and numerous "flying bugs" all try to get in on the action.
At the bottom of my yard is 3.5 mile wide stretch of natural river, being at one with nature is the best thing that I've ever experienced.....You can keep the extreme funfair rides and city lofts IMHO!
