Metal band, Lordi won the Eurovision contest [english.ohmynews.com], the contest that gave us Celine Dion. Pretty cool that a large contest such as this would choose a metal band over conventional acts.

Congratulations Finland!

I happen to know a few Metal fans, and they told me that Lordi is as far from Metal as Avril Lavigne is from Punk.

They are billed as Death Metal, but I actually found them to be closer to metal (as seen on mtv) than to death metal. So I pretty much agree with your friend.

Just to show how out of the pop scene I am, I never heard of Lordi nor of Eurovision until now.
My traffic DID go down noticeably yesterday, and bounced back up plus interest today.
No, I'm not a Frank Sinatra fan. -Larry

I never heard of Lordi [...] until now.

Nothing to be ashamed of. The most noticeable thing about them are their stage customes: it's like StarTrek Klingons meet Lord of the Rings Orks...

But as with many page 3 tabloid models: as long as the packaging is nice, the content can be neglected.

Congratulations to Lordi! :)

The UK's entry came 19th - yes it was bad, but we should have come a bit higher than that!

Yes, well done Lordi who actually won on some sort of merit. (Costume-based merit perhaps?)

I do wish they'd sort out the voting system, though.

What are the two biggest ethnic minority populations in Moldova? Well you could probably guess from the way the Moldovan public gave 12 points to Romania and 10 to Russia.

And the biggest ethnic minority in France (after the Maghrebins who aren't yet eligible to take part in the contest)? Step forward and claim your 12 points, Turkey.

Germany? Turkey again of course!

Belarus, Ukraine, Armenia? All voting for Russia!

Actually there are significant Russian ex-pat populations in so many countries, I can't see that Russia will ever be out of the top five - no matter how bad the song - for as long as the results are based 100% on the public vote.

Surely the rule where you can't vote for your home country isn't much use when you don't actually live and work in your home country (... and can therefore vote for it)?!

I thought it was Roy Wood from the Wizard days but Lordi deserved to win when you compare it to the rest of the pap the other countries served up.

The UK's entry came 19th - yes it was bad, but we should have come a bit higher than that!
It was abysmal and should have had no points; it was not even a song; it was rap. This is a song contest not a performance contest. I was ashamed to be British.

I've long been of the opinion that there are only one way to make the voting fair:-

Every song must be sung in the language of the host country, no song may refer to their own country or culture, and the nationality of the singers must be carefully kept secret until after the voting is complete.

Death metal? Surely it's glam rock?

Still, it's cool to see a song that stands out from the usual Eurovision dreck :)

I liked the Lordi song and thought that it was very entertaining. The UK one was dreadfull.

However I'm still not sure what the rules are on who can enter the compeition.

I had assummed that only new/relatively new acts could enter it, but apparently Lordi are very established in their home country and have had several albums.

Does this mean that the UK could have put forward bands like Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand, Keane, etc?

If so we should have been putting forward one of the numerous and successfull bands doing the rounds at the moment, or one of the upcoming bands - not some rapper.
