Took the plunge tonight... I got sick of staring at my dirty computer screen. Grabbed a paper towel and some water (couldn't find Windex) and wiped away a couple of well placed smudges.

At work it drives me nuts when someone touches my computer screen with their greasy fingers. I'm completely spineless when it comes to this, I must admit. When I see a finger heading towards my screen I just cringe and inspect for damage after they leave. I should say what's really on my mind:

"Keep your dirty frigg’n fingers off my screen! You may not mind staring at a smudged up screen but look at mine! Did you dip your hand in olive oil before you stopped by? No, wait - it’s from those oily potato chips. I can tell from the crumbs you've left all over my keyboard."

It drives me nuts - really.

At home my screen just gets plain old dusty. It’s probably been six months since the last time I cleaned it. I forgot how sharp the screen could be. Let’s face it, our computer screens are the windows to this world. Am I the only one that likes to look through a clean window?

Haha, that pisses me off as well. Just got a new Dell laptop with a 17in screen and you should see the amount of marks on it when you look at it from the right angle.

Muppets pointing out something on the screen and wiping their hands all over it! Can you wash your screen with just water, I thought that's not the best.

Maybe screens should be developed to emit a small electric jolt when touched.. just enough to teach people not to touch them. BTW, I can barely see around the smudges, smoke stains and coffee splats to write this.. anyone got a rag?

Just bought a 20" monitor because I didn't want to clean the old 17"... from ashes, smoke, and the occasional spit from reading lawman's posts... [webmasterworld.com...]

I also buy a new keyboard every 2 months...

Oh well... :)

So why did they design LCD's to have that nice soft spongy feel and special water drop effect, if it wasn't as reward for poking at them?

LOL - this is like one of those back up threads where as soon as read it I stop everything and do loads of back ups.

My screen is a lot cleaner now. I only do the keyboard when I am utterly board on a long haul flight and cannot sleep.

Maybe in that vein, Visit Thailand, a "Clean your computer" thread should be started every six months so that people remember to clean their computer. :) I know cleaning my computer is the LAST thing on my mind when I am being pulled in 10 directions. A good reminder thread with helpful hints on the latest techniques for how to clean various computer components would greatly help! :)

If it is a CRT you are cleaning, and you have a geiger counter/scintillometer/other radiation detector, measure the dust fresh from the screen- it can be an eye opener!
Much as I'd like to be self-righteous about it, I had my visiting friend bat my pointing hand away from his laptop screen more than once.
