Membership of these bodies typically requires either accredited professional qualifications plus a few years suitable experience, or taking exams provided by the body (for those with non-accredited qualifications) plus a few years experience, or an enormous number of years experience in so many fields that the requirement accredited professional qualification can be waived.
They may also require new members to have two proposers who are already members.
Membership typically depends upon payment of a small annual fee and upon obtaining sufficient continuing professional development (CPD) points from approved activities during a year. Depending upon the legal status of the body full members in good standing may be permitted to use initials after their name (e.g. MICE - member of the institution of chartered engineers), and to confer 'chartered' status upon the member - opening the door to work at a higher level.
Are there such bodies in web development? And if so - what are they - and how well recognised are they? If there aren't - shouldn't there be?
IWA / HWG don't have any entry requirements so aren't quite what I'm talking about. Most professional bodies require substantial qualification and experience - making membership itself an indication of quality.
CIW seems to be just an exam system - or have I got that wrong? I looked to find out how to become a member but didn't find it anywhere.
Whilst searching I did manage to find the British Computer Society (bcs.org.uk) which seems to be what I was asking about. I guess I answered my own question... now to try to apply!
