Why do so few people publish their URL on WW?

Why don't people put their URL on their profile?

Especially these users that claim to earn thousands of dollars each month. If their website is that established surely they'd be able to prevent any kind of click fraud from competitors on ww. I would have thought putting your URL on your ww profile could only be a good thing and drive more people to your site?

People have many different reasons for not putting any website in their profile. There are many old threads that deal with this topic. Perhaps someone has a link to one of those threads?

A lot of SE reps read here - many members do not want their WebmasterWorld nickname associated with their site.

Also, if you run sites that are very niche in subject, it's unlikely that you'd find genuinely interested WebmasterWorld members... - there's no point "driving people to your site" unless it's worthwhile traffic.

I don't really understand the problem with being associated with ww... however I do get your other points.

I did find a post covering the topics....

why is yours not in your profile? ;-)

many people find they have a niche market and to let others know about it would just add competition to their sector, so why make things harder for yourself.

makes sense to me to be honest.

it does really depend on what your site is all about though. I'd wouldn't mind putting mine in as it is not earning from ads or affiliates, just pure in house sales.

For someone to copy and do what we do they would need someone with certain finance qualifications, over 200 staff dealing with the clients and we are one of the market leaders in what we do so are very well known. Not saying someone couldn't copy us, it would just be a long and challenging job to do.

Not with WebmasterWorld - with your WebmasterWorld nick.

Sometimes we post things that we would prefer not to be associated with a particular site...

lol well i haven't actually got a 'proper' site online at the moment is the answer.

But then if I did I probably wouldn't post it because I'd be embarrassed that it doesn't compare to the sites of the experts out there!

I have been wondering that also. As Zounds said, "if you have something to hide then it must be bad."

Could it be, that these people claiming to be earning tens of thousands of dollars everymonth from Adsense are not telling the truth?!

Surely not <g>

also note, that anyone can put their url in their profile, but until they have about 10'ish posts to their nick, it will not show to anyone. This stops profile spamming for the link pop value.

Why is it that the folk that say they have "nothing to hide" never send me their financial records, when requested?

I used to list my url (albeit back in 2001) - then a funny thing happened, a new competitor suddenly appeared in my space using my same supplier (stole a bunch of my images too) - later on I figured out that the owner of that site was a ww'er and I figured out his nic - needless to say I yanked my url off, never would consider putting it back....

Success breeds competition. If someone sees you doing well, and has the opportunity & desire to try to duplicate that, they'll turn into a competitor. Especially if they watch your posts often, they'll be able to see what you're dealing with, and from that they can divine what you're doing and not doing.

I'd say the chief reason I don't want my URLs in my profile is I don't want my competitors to so easily figure out what we're up to. And GYM, for that matter ... 8-)

I removed my URL when a post appeard (back in 2001 I think) about an Inktomi black list. It was rumored that Ink saw any WebmasterWorld member as a potential spammer. I don't know if the rumor was true but I do believe SEs will sometimes make assumptions about members and may manually review members sites. Call me paranoid, well I am a WebmasterWorld member ;)

Also, I don't want competitors creaping about my sites stealing the best bits that I've taken years to figure out. A bit more paranoia, or is it reality, I don't know, but removing my URL means I don't have to know :)
