J.J. Abrams, producer of hit shows Lost and Alias, as well as director of the upcoming Paramount film "Mission: Impossible III," is slated to produce and direct the next Star Trek feature.

The proposed story will focus on the early days of James T. Kirk and Spock, including their first meeting at Starfleet Academy and their first mission in space.

Looking forward to this release but I still really miss Generations.

How will they do the early days of Kirk and Spock? Shatner is 75 now, and Spock is about 175. No matter how much make up, neither of them will look 20 again. If they use different actors, it will be no good at all. They should have them appearing in the future, i.e. future compared to all the other Star Trek time-periods, looking like their real ages. Seven of Nine should be aboard. Janeway too. Picard has to be there. Quark, for sure. Data, what the hell - why not. Wesley Crusher should be mentioned as having been clubbed to death at some point in the past.

Anyway, good to hear there's another one in the pipe. (I still haven't seen the last one - should rent it on DVD sometime.)

I just had a very similar discussion in another forum :-)

As for the age thing: I'm sure the infinite supply of actors in Hollywood will come up with two persons who can get away with being the juvenile version of Kirk and Spock. Maybe Shatner/Nimoy have sons/grandsons who are actors?

And as to what you can get away with: just take a look at the new Battlestar Galactica series. All I say is "Starbuck".

I admit, I'd rather see a DS9/Voyager movie. But, I think this can be done. It's probably more of a question of makeup and acting ability, rather than looks.

It's probably more of a question of ... acting ability ...

Well, I guess that counts out Shatner. ;)

Hehe yeah. I like Shatner, but he is looking a little out of it these days.

He was hilarious on Millionaire a while back. He was the last celebrity left in the contestant pool -- they gave him a Fastest Finger question that went like: Put these words in the proper order: Kirk, James, Tiberius, Captain. He got it wrong, but they had to let him on anyway. :)

He's great. Did you hear any of the songs off his latest album, "Has Been"? The one, "Common People", is brilliant. It's a Pulp cover, done by him and Joe Jackson.

Yeah, trot out Bill and Leonard, and trowel the make-up on them. I'd very much like it if Quark were along, though - maybe have him fall through a time-distortion hole/thingmajig to get him back there. Even though he was a Ferengi, he was the most human of the bunch on TNG, and the only one I could really relate to.
