It's hard to imagine someone getting a research paper out of it, although they do say, "The study did not say how long the nails were."
You have to wonder if the Journal of Neurosurgery mostly posted the news item because of the yuck factor.
Absolutley. The journal will have posted the story knowing that the media would pick it up based on the "yuck" factor. It's good exposure for the journal and its website but as they're not aimed at the layperson it's ultimately of very little value beyond the short term peak of interest that'll wane in a day or two.
