Today is Tartan day in the USA and unlike St Patrick's day last month Google failed to recognise it on their logo. They also failed to recognise St Andrews day on 30 November.
Do they have a bias against we Scots? How come St Andrew's day and Tartan day are not deemed worthy of recognition? :(
Fair play to the Irish but Scotland has given the world so many things. I would list these here but there are too many to remember. Television, telephone, penicillin and anaesthesia are some of the more obvious.
Tartan Day: "Since 1998, the date has been officially recognised by the US Senate as a celebration of the contribution generations of Scots-Americans have made to the character and prosperity of the United States".
It most certainly is not a joke. Here is the US Senate Resolution.
"Whereas April 6 has a special significance for all Americans, and especially those Americans of Scottish descent, because the Declaration of Arbroath, the Scottish Declaration of Independence, was signed on April 6, 1320 and the American Declaration of Independence was modelled on that inspirational document;
Whereas this resolution honors the major role that Scottish Americans played in the founding of this Nation, such as the fact that almost half of the signers of the Declaration of independence were of Scottish descent, the Governors in 9 of the original 13 States were of Scottish ancestry, Scottish Americans successfully helped shape this country in its formative years and guide this Nation through its most troubled times; Whereas this resolution recognizes the monumental achievements and invaluable contributions made by Scottish Americans that have led to America's preeminence in the fields of science, technology, medicine, government, politics, economics, architecture, literature, media, and visual and performing arts;
Whereas this resolution commends the more than 200 organizations throughout the United States that honor Scottish heritage, tradition, and culture, representing the hundreds of thousands of Americans of Scottish descent, residing in every State, who already have made the observance of Tartan Day on April 6 a success; Whereas these numerous individuals, clans, societies, clubs, and fraternal organizations do not let the great contributions of the Scottish people go unnoticed:
Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the Senate designates April 6 of each year as "National Tartan Day".

I'm surprised that Google doesn't recognize St Andrews Day on Google UK at least.
Disclaimer, I'm a Sassenach ;)

This ignorance of all things Caledonian is bordering on racism :(
Fully Scottish and had never heard of it until a few days ago.
This has been going on since 1998 but you would only hear about it if you read newspapers and watch the television news. ;)
Incidentally our first minister, Jack McConnell, considers it important enough to be in attendance. Where have you guys been?
Also, if NY gets a parade on 6th, does Glasgow get anything? Maybe a few people in George Square? A parade down Buchanan Street?
Tongue only half in cheek there...
Incidentally our first minister, Jack McConnell, considers it important enough to be in attendance.
Sure, him and his gang at the tune of £1.3 mill of tax payers money.
Tartan day is so important that the big parade was not even shown on Scottish TV news. Or was McConnell again dressed up like Rob Roy and it would therefore have been an embarrassment to show it?
I once got mail from the US addressed to
Beedeedubbleu
My address
Scotland
England, UK. :)

I thnk you are missing the point. Tartan day is not a Scottish event. It is a US event held in New York that celebrates the USA's links to Scotland and its Scottish heritage.
The reason people dress up in highland dress is that it's tartan day. Get it? ;)
There is no need to get embarrassed, that's what it's all about. Incidentally it is only because you are a Scot that you get embarrased. People outside of Scotland don't see it this way.
But you're comparing apples and pears - St. George's Day is a national day for England in the same way as St. Andrew's Day is for Scotland. Tartan Day is a political invention to boost Scottish visibility in the US. Do Google celebrate St. Andrew's Day? Note that the St. George's Day logo must be UK only as I certainly don't see it here in Canada. Why should Google add a logo for Tartan Day in the UK when it is an event aimed at the US market?
