Drink plenty of fluids (soup is good), get lots of rest, and go easy on the cold medicines - the antihistamines prevent your dripping nasal passages from doing what they're supposed to do, which is getting rid of the bacteria or viruses that are there, and the fever also helps to make things more inhospitable for the wee beasties that have taken up temporary residence in your body.

Take a long hot shower. Helps loosen everything up in your head and keep it moving. Also good for aches and pains.

I'm an advocate for a shot of Nyquil and going to bed.

Lemon juice, honey and brandy - heated.

Had a doctor tell me this once.

Don't know if it helped me feel better, but after a few of these I really didn't much care.

Just drink plenty of water and let the body do the rest. No need for any drug related remedies. A common cold needs to run its course and our bodies do a great job (usually) of fighting them off.

I'm a firm believer in the chicken soup method. Homemade chicken soup, not anything out of a can. Throw a half a chicken in the crock, some veggies and you're good to go. Usually one big bowl will do the trick. ;)

1. Put on 2 pairs of socks, some sweats, and get under your blankets and sweat it out. Do not be tempted to throw off the blankets when you start sweating. You will feel much better in the morning.

2. Stop drinking milk. Some people believe you become susceptible to colds because the body has accumulated to much mucus, and needs to throw it off.

3. Drink tea with lemon juice, or drink some pickle juice or tomato juice, to change the acidic level in your body.

4. Make garlic sandwiches. Thinly slice or crush some garlic, make some toast, butter it, put the garlic on it and force yourself to eat it. Do this 3 times a day.

5. Get a bottle of Blackberry Brandy. It won't get rid of the cold, but it will knock you out for sure.

Agree with pageoneresults and SweetCognac (just make sure the lemon juice is squeezed not processed) but also am a strong believer in Japanese Green Tea and also very fresh Carott Juice (ie you make it and drink it within seconds - the oxygen ruins it).

Move to a better climate ;)

I used to live in England, cold and nasty in the Winter!

I got a cold or the flu every single year, consistently :(

12 years ago I moved to Florida, since that time I have caught a cold only twice, they both occurred when I returned to England in the Winter!

Florida says it is the Orange juice that stops us from getting colds, personally I believe it is the Sun!

It could be the orange juice. My wife and I keep a supply of vitamin C tablets in the kitchen cupboard. For the last few years, whenever we note the first sign of a cold starting, we OD on vitamin C for a day or two. I believe that this can sometimes nip it in the bud before it starts.

Eat loads of garlic and chilli, drink loads of brandy, cooked with fresh lemons and honey (same as willybfriendly) and if that doesnt work, get some fisherman's friends... they are the best (the extra strong ones).

Make some Master Tonic!

Ingredients:
Equal amounts of:

FRESH white onion
FRESH horseradish
FRESH garlic
FRESH ginger
FRESH habanero peppers

unprocessed unpasteurized apple cider vinegar

Preparation Instructions:
Finely chop (using gloves) first 5 ingredients and fill a container 3/4 full. Fill container completely with apple cider vinegar. Seal and store at room temperature. Shake container at least once a day for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks is over strain the solids out and discard them. I pour it through an old t-shirt, but you can buy cheesecloth if that grosses you out.

Liquid is a natural antibiotic. Also known as Monk's Tea-the monks took it when treating folks with the black plague to keep from getting sick. It's powerful stuff. Take it as soon as you start feeling sick, or regularly if you can take it. It will keep you from getting sick, and shorten the duration of colds if you're already sick.

Sorry, it won't help you with the current cold. Unless you can stay sick for at least another two weeks...

Eat cheesy garlic toast and drink hot lemon with honey and liberal slug of whisky.

Toast bread one side only, under the grill. Chop one large clove of garlic per slice of bread. When bread is toasted, sprinkle the raw garlic bits on the untoasted side, top with slices of tasty cheddar. Put back under grill till cheese has melted.

Tastes good, and garlic is nature's antibiotic. The other benefit is you stink so bad no-one will get close enough to catch the cold from you ;)

And the whisky will knock you out so you don't care!

We have found that the previous recommendations for chicken soup, hot water with lemon and honey, and chili all work pretty good.

Bottle of Remy Martin, and an orange.

Drink Cognac and suck on orange. Orange gives you vitamin C to ward of colds and cognac clears up your cold - or gives you a big enough hangover that makes you forget about the cold.

<added>This works I tried it myself - ooooh my head</added>

Cup of hot milk with a cap full of whiskey in before you go to bed.

Make a poultice of fried onions. (a poultice is a fabric bag, cheesecloth works well, but a small dishcloth tied in a bundle or even a coffee filter will do in a pinch)

Peel some garlic, separate and bruise the cloves. Put the bruised cloves between each of your toes and go to bed with the onion poultice on your chest.

When you wake up, take a long bath with 3 lemons floating in it.

Here's what you need to do, two options:

Option 1 - if your the "organic" kind:

- Hang garlic from your neck
- Stick two cucumbers over your eyes
- Peel and dice two large carrots
- Squeeze lemon juice on your arms and legs
- Add lettuce and toss gently

Option 2 - if you like to drink:

- Drink two 1 liter bottles of whiskey and
- 12 bottles of beer

By the time you wake up your cold will be over. If not, you'll be too hung over to tell.

>- Drink two 1 liter bottles of whiskey and

I like to drink, but, I think that is more like suicide than a cure for a cold ;) Okay, it might be fun trying, but, I doubt anyone under 400Lbs can actually stay awake long enough to consume that amount of Whiskey in one evening, I've tried and never succeeded :)

Two things do appear as a consensus in the above posts:

1. Alcohol
2. Sources of vitamin C...Oranges or Lemons.

My Mother always claims that Whisky & Orange Juice cures everything, a common drink in the UK amongst the older generation......I guess that they know best?

Just today I've started a cold relapse. Two weeks of trying to feel better and BLAM! I'll be in bed all day tomorrow. But, for tonight there is Hot Dr. Pepper.

Bring a saucepan of Dr Pepper to a simmer. Do not boil. Pour while hot into your favorite cup or mug, add a slice of citrus, lemon is best, and enjoy. I feel better already.

This does wonders for me even for the flu, I usually drink loads of hot fluids, like tea or even just hot water to make my self sweat faster.

garlic tea works wonders. It's simple: crush a clove of garlic into a tea ball, steep in a mug of hot water, and add sugar. The secret to palatable garlic tea is to make it very sweet - for one mug, I'll add over a tbsp of sugar.

To clear up congestion, a flaming hot vindaloo curry or chinese hot&sour soup usually does the job.

On the pharmaceutical side, I advocate 3 products: NyQuil, DayQuil, and ColdFX.

I am sure when I was at uni years ago a biochemistry lecturer told us that alcohol was one of these worst things you can take? Or is it the have a sore right leg then hit your left with a hammer cure :)

Well in that case, the perfect cure should be a pint of Rock 'n Rye!
