I'm a firm believer in the chicken soup method. Homemade chicken soup, not anything out of a can. Throw a half a chicken in the crock, some veggies and you're good to go. Usually one big bowl will do the trick. ;)
2. Stop drinking milk. Some people believe you become susceptible to colds because the body has accumulated to much mucus, and needs to throw it off.
3. Drink tea with lemon juice, or drink some pickle juice or tomato juice, to change the acidic level in your body.
4. Make garlic sandwiches. Thinly slice or crush some garlic, make some toast, butter it, put the garlic on it and force yourself to eat it. Do this 3 times a day.
5. Get a bottle of Blackberry Brandy. It won't get rid of the cold, but it will knock you out for sure.
I used to live in England, cold and nasty in the Winter!
I got a cold or the flu every single year, consistently :(
12 years ago I moved to Florida, since that time I have caught a cold only twice, they both occurred when I returned to England in the Winter!
Florida says it is the Orange juice that stops us from getting colds, personally I believe it is the Sun!
Ingredients:
Equal amounts of:
FRESH white onion
FRESH horseradish
FRESH garlic
FRESH ginger
FRESH habanero peppers
unprocessed unpasteurized apple cider vinegar
Preparation Instructions:
Finely chop (using gloves) first 5 ingredients and fill a container 3/4 full. Fill container completely with apple cider vinegar. Seal and store at room temperature. Shake container at least once a day for 2 weeks. After 2 weeks is over strain the solids out and discard them. I pour it through an old t-shirt, but you can buy cheesecloth if that grosses you out.
Liquid is a natural antibiotic. Also known as Monk's Tea-the monks took it when treating folks with the black plague to keep from getting sick. It's powerful stuff. Take it as soon as you start feeling sick, or regularly if you can take it. It will keep you from getting sick, and shorten the duration of colds if you're already sick.
Sorry, it won't help you with the current cold. Unless you can stay sick for at least another two weeks...
Toast bread one side only, under the grill. Chop one large clove of garlic per slice of bread. When bread is toasted, sprinkle the raw garlic bits on the untoasted side, top with slices of tasty cheddar. Put back under grill till cheese has melted.
Tastes good, and garlic is nature's antibiotic. The other benefit is you stink so bad no-one will get close enough to catch the cold from you ;)
And the whisky will knock you out so you don't care!
Peel some garlic, separate and bruise the cloves. Put the bruised cloves between each of your toes and go to bed with the onion poultice on your chest.
When you wake up, take a long bath with 3 lemons floating in it.
Option 1 - if your the "organic" kind:
- Hang garlic from your neck
- Stick two cucumbers over your eyes
- Peel and dice two large carrots
- Squeeze lemon juice on your arms and legs
- Add lettuce and toss gently
Option 2 - if you like to drink:
- Drink two 1 liter bottles of whiskey and
- 12 bottles of beer
By the time you wake up your cold will be over. If not, you'll be too hung over to tell.
I like to drink, but, I think that is more like suicide than a cure for a cold ;) Okay, it might be fun trying, but, I doubt anyone under 400Lbs can actually stay awake long enough to consume that amount of Whiskey in one evening, I've tried and never succeeded :)
Two things do appear as a consensus in the above posts:
1. Alcohol
2. Sources of vitamin C...Oranges or Lemons.
My Mother always claims that Whisky & Orange Juice cures everything, a common drink in the UK amongst the older generation......I guess that they know best?
Bring a saucepan of Dr Pepper to a simmer. Do not boil. Pour while hot into your favorite cup or mug, add a slice of citrus, lemon is best, and enjoy. I feel better already.
1. Put on 2 pairs of socks, some sweats, and get under your blankets and sweat it out. Do not be tempted to throw off the blankets when you start sweating. You will feel much better in the morning.
This does wonders for me even for the flu, I usually drink loads of hot fluids, like tea or even just hot water to make my self sweat faster.
To clear up congestion, a flaming hot vindaloo curry or chinese hot&sour soup usually does the job.
On the pharmaceutical side, I advocate 3 products: NyQuil, DayQuil, and ColdFX.
