How important are the words in the url to ad targeting?

I'm working on a new site and have put google adwords within different parts of my site. For whatever reason, the particular script I'm using allows me to enter an incorrect url and still get the homepage. For example, my homepage is this:

[coolwidgets.com...]

However, if I enter

[coolwidgets.com...]

it will still send me to the home page without errors.

But a strange thing happens. If I Just look at the regular homepage without the made up url I get ads completely unrelated to widgets. But if I change the url to different words I get ads perfectly aligned to the url, i.e. widgets made in france or whatever else I type in there. Is this normal?

I haven't submitted my site to google and it is so new it hasn't even been tracked yet I'm sure.

Thanks in advance.

I think having the keywords in URL helps at first, before page has been indexed by Adsense spider. The spider comes pretty quickly after page load, so it is not a major concern.

On the other hand, it seems like sometimes having strong keywords in URL can prevent Adsense from showing spidered ads. If that is the case, I think it's better to keep page name generic, so Adsense able to display more targeted ads.

Maybe having a subject-specific URL is best static pages, but no for dynamic ones (forums, classifieds), since with dynamic ones you cannot predict what the keywords are going to be.
