RPC decreased dramatically over last 6 months

Not just a weekly phenomenon but a serious downward spiral

I started with Adsense in December 2004 (having built up a lot of content over a year - site's been public since August 2004). In the first four months, my Revenue per Click was fairly stable, then in April i suddenly dropped considerably. After another couple of months, it decreased even more. This month (August), there is yet another significant drop, so now I'm earning about a third per click than I was six months ago:

Dec-04 $0.27
Jan-05 $0.30
Feb-05 $0.27
Mar-05 $0.25
Apr-05 $0.17
May-05 $0.19
Jun-05 $0.17
Jul-05 $0.13
Aug-05 $0.09

In the same period, the CTR has improved from 2.6 average up to March, to 3.8% average after March (slight drop from July to August). Page impressions have also been extremely stable in the last months, although there's a noticeable increase in August.

The number of clicks is virtually the same from March to now (the first two months we were building up traffic).

The site has been the same in terms of layout. It's content-rich and obviously new pages are being added all the time, but the ads have not changed in looks or placement.

Our earnings are up and down due to this - particularly this month it's frustrating as we've finally had a break-through in terms of traffic (due to the dmoz listing perhaps), but although the CTR is pretty stable, we're now earning less than at the beginning of the year.

I know that sometimes advertising budgets change, plus some other factors, and I'm not usually concerned about minor fluctuations, but this seems like quite an unhealthy trend to me.

We use Adwords as well and there haven't been many changes in terms of CPC for our keywords (which are naturally the same as the ones on the site).

Any insights/advice would be welcome. Sorry for the lengthy post but I think maybe some details will help.

oceangoing: If you look around on the forum you will find a number of threads dealing with this issue. Many of use experenced a dramatic drop in earnings in the March/April period. Lots of speculation. More than likely it is SmartPricing having an impact.

The search engine on WW is very poor, so you have to do some manual digging. How this one:
