domain.com vs domain.com/index.htm for PSAs

One shows PSAs the other shows targeted

Interesting thing going on today. All of the sudden if I go to [mydomain.com...] I see PSAs (haven't set up a default of my own yet). If I go to the same page as [mydomain.com...] I see targeted ads.

I normally see targeted ads when I go to the first version.

Bizarre.

Are both of them still in the index? Which has the higher PR?

AHA! I just checked to make sure both were still in the index. The one that is showing PSAs must have been spidered last night. We are doing some database maintenance at night and replace the standard front page with a message explaining that the site is shut down for maintenance.

Google is showing the site down message in the index instead of the front page. The index.php page looks fine in the index.

Same here. Index.html or hitting refresh and no PSA's.

This is interesting, since Google has said that mediabot and googlebot don't share information, and anything in the serps shouldn't affect your AdSense targeting.

Can you check your stats to see if by coincidence mediabot happened to stop by your index page at the same time your site was down for maintenance?

I'm not really sure how to check that. All I'm using for stats right now is webalizer.

If you tell me an easy way to do it I'll be happy to check.

Actually, I think that it would make sense for Mediabot and Googlebot to talk. Look at it this way: Googlebot is interested in new pages - and Mediabot can provide these.

Googlebot also likes sites that update often - and again, Mediabot can detect this, since on a growing site Adsense often will be called from unindexed pages, so Mediabot will have to drop by.
