Hi!

I have a site that displays adsense ads and I just recently put them up (about half a month now) and have a few Q's - I did read through tons of posts but most of it's over my head still :-)

I have the normal adsense banner (looks just like the banners of old).

Sometimes instead of 4 ads appearing in it there is only one in the entire box- why is that?

Does adsense get better over time?

Sometimes I make a lot more for less click volume - why's that?

People say it's good to diversify and to be an affiliate. What's that, and what's a good one?

Lastly, even though I have signed up for text ads, quite a few times I see a full color one appearing - how come?

Sorry for the newby Q's but like I said, all the other posts are a bit over my head :-)

Aha! I found out why sometimes there is only one ad in the box - from Google's site;

"AdSense Update - August 4 2005
To increase monetization on your site and improve the relevance of ads, AdSense now varies the number of text ads that appear in a given ad unit. In cases where we determine that increasing the size of the most relevant ads will improve performance, we'll drop the lowest-performing ad or ads and expand the remaining ones to fill the entire unit. Showing fewer ads works to your advantage, allowing the better-performing ads to draw more user attention and click-throughs. Google AdSense technology will automatically determine the optimal number of ads to display on any page and will only show fewer ads when doing so will make you more money!"

Depends on the website , if the site gets better (more content, more traffic ) Adsense should get better, but its a constant roller coaster even for the most established websites.

Thats not uncommon, speculation varies from lower paying ads being displayed to lower quality clicks to smart pricing.

Any one who will provide you with a means of displaying their ads on your site for a cpc or impressions. Or in the case of companies like Amazon, you can sell their items off your site.

Lastly, even though I have signed up for text ads, quite a few times I see a full color one appearing - how come?

Did you have that option set under Adtype preference in "my account" or when generating code. I think the former is a global setting.

Good luck!

Thanks Walrus - that clears it up a lot. I re-checked my Adsense settings and the box for enabling full color ads was checked off (even though I thought it wasn't) so that was the issue there.

Just a question - next to adsense what is the most popular affiliate program that people generally use? I ask because I checked into advertising long ago and was declined by a company. I gave up then and was going to shut the site down due to out of pocket costs but came here and asked what to do to create some revenue. Everyone said use AdSense so I did and I've covered my expenses for the year in one month :-)

Basically, my issue is not knowing who to choose so if I knew the most common second choice after AdSense it would make it easier for me :-)

That's really a matter of opinion. I did real well with CJ for a long time. As far as displaying contextual ads I've never gone with anybody except google. There are literally hundreds of ways to make money from a website though. There are some hosting companies that pay upwards of 100.00 per sale and many of them will negotiate even higher payouts for you if you can guarantee the hits and this can be pretty lucrative if your site visitors are into that sort of thing.

Second choice after adsense with regard to contextual ads or just second choice in general? As far as context ads there is no one (yet) paying as well as google.

Thanks wyweb!

I have an account with Commission Junction but I never really did anything with them because it was pretty complicated. It seemed I had to choose ads and also apply for some programs. I did, and got accepted, but the hard part for me was trying to determine what was worth pursuing and would pay well. It seems unless you know all about advertising (I don't) CJ is kind if difficult.

AdSense is handy for me because it chooses practically everything. All I do is choose where it goes and it does the rest providing relevant ads that people actually click. These days all I do is log in and see what I made :-) That's pretty easy compared to what I saw at CJ.

The first real beauty of Adsense is its simplicity not only for publishers to earn money but also for making it possible for advertisers to enjoy worldwide exposure at reasonable cost.

And secondly it is something the advertiser can judge his ROI very quickly indeed rather than through the traditional media route.
