Is this an online myth?

Do you really believe this new legend?

But the scraper boys can throw up a site in a few hours that makes more in a month than each individual content site of mine makes all year.

This quote is from this thread.
If you can't beat them...join them [webmasterworld.com]

Is that so easy to make money online? If so, how many the scraper-site millionaires do you know?

I think this is just an online myth.

I would be surpised if google doesn't employ at least one worker ant to check on the sites that are being paid out huge amounts by them with the income rising in a very short term time.

Surely you could write a program easily that would show the increase and decrease in earnings per month by adsence clients. Those that increase rapidly, and then decrease rapidly after a change in google could warrent extra attention.

I make at least 40% more every month for the last 4 months. Sometimes more. We are on target to be making 7 figures a year by December.

I'll do 7 figures with adsense next year easy as well.

FromRocky ... yes, I do remember these quotes. I think it is in one of the first discussions (and I may say heated) about scrapers and Adsense. The person admitted to doing scrapers, and proudly so.

I think that perhaps we are asking ourselves the wrong question about the life of a scraper.

We are asking: Is it profitable?

Well, nothing is a sure thing in business. You won't stick with anything long enough if you keep worrying if something else is more profitable.

We could ask: Is it "fun"?

Now some aspects of scraping do appeal to me. Like using my programming skills to find and soak up little bits of money from around the internet. The (unlikely though it is) promise of spending a few hours and being rich within months.

Other aspects don't sound fun. Registering and moving sites around like crazy, trying to outsmart search engines, cutting and pasting text, trying to find the next best keywords, the next best word scrambling algorithm, constantly resubmitting to search engines and link exchanges. Having lots of sites, but none that I would actually mention or feel proud of. It begins to sound a lot like *work*.

Maybe I could build a site that people will actually find useful. I could still use my programming skills, domain knowledge, common sense and useful content that I write or hire out to more competent writers. Now that sounds fun!

My 1st wife's fahter was working for the Austrian Casinos.

There was in the newspapers "Arabian won $2 million"

I asked him about this newspaper article

He answered "Yes he won at one day $2 million, but he lost all the other days, so the casino made about $10 million with him"

While normal AdSense publisher post some times like "My EPC is down", I think no scrapper site owner will post "Since last Google update, my visitors are down by 95%". They are more likely to impress others how they make money with scrap, but they will not post how they loose.

Very good question.

I have fun with my work. Work? Duty to write about good developments, sort out what is not good useable for the future of humanity.

I can not wait until my wife has translated my sites to English, not mainly for the money, but to use them in usenet discussions.

I can be pride about what I do.
I obtain a high prestige at companies, where I write about their inoovations and they get new customers from my web site.

I travel around to see interesting new projects and I can talk with interesting people.

Companies are sending me new widgets to test them. 6 items until now, the most valuable was 420.-EUR. I work hard to improve this statistic.

And what has a scraper site owner to have fun at his work and to be pride of?

Some enjoy the game, and others are like all the other people who just "do it for the money."

Also, not everyone has the skills or the attention span that are needed to develop a profitable information site, a successful e-commerce business, a consulting firm, or whatever.

It's not a myth. But unless you create a "scruper" (a scraper with scruples), your revenue will not be long term. Topix.net is an excellent example of a scruper, as is Google.com.

A scruper is any site that scrapes other site's content with the intention of improving that content in some way (i.e. categorizing it so it's easier to find).

And obviously, a scruper takes a ton of time and resources to set up, whereas a scraper can be in place in minutes.

Completely agree. I think scrapper sites scrap content in part while the "scruper" sites scrap the whole content. e.g. news and rss feeds.
