The Heat Map, in particular, might give you some guidance on what ad locations to test.
By experimenting with various banners and styles you will soon find patterns, and what works best. I would advise that you use a channel on all banners to enable you to work out what works and what doesn't.
I have three basic layouts throughout the entire site, and the handfull of pages with adsense on will have whatever has proven to work best on that page. I also periodically try new layouts. I've recently added an adlinks banner again to one of my pages. Last time I tried adlinks it was a dismal failure, but this time around one banner now accounts for approx 10% of my daily earnings.
