I see many posts here that mention how much money people are making from their adsesne sites... How many sites do most people have? I have one site right now, but looking to branch out with other ideas. I have to expect the people making a ton of money have a bunch of sites...right?

Quite a number of folks here only have one site, another bunch have more than one.

A ton of money is kind of hard to understand.

But you can make well over $1,000 a month on a single site. Even several times that amount with the right site.

Site size, topic and traffic levels all play a role.

I have (now) 9 sites with AS on them. There are advantages and disadvantages to both approaches (one site vs. multiple sites). The more you let any site sit without adding new content, getting new links, etc., the more likely it will fall in the rankings. So if you use the multi-site approach, every new site you build is that much more work added to your on-going list. At some point, I'll hit a time brick wall and have to outsource or hire people to do some of the on-going stuff. That's the negative. The positives with multiple sites outweigh that, in my view. The big one is the spreading out of your risk. If you have a site or two get hit by a G ranking shake-up (a la Bourbon), you keep on truckin'. I also find myself not burning out because I can shift my mental focus so often. Writing about and thinking about one topic 24/7 would bore me to tears.

The big downside to having one site is all those eggs are sitting in one basket. G changes things up and you might lose close to it all. The advantages of one site include being able to focus all your efforts on one topic, enabling you to become the authority in your niche (or at least compete with the existing authorities). If you really love your topic, it becomes a labor of love.

Even though I've chosen the multiple sites approach, I know you can do well with either. It's really a personal preference kind of thing. GOOD LUCK!

One of the main disadvantages to having more than one site, is the risk of invalid clicks getting your whole network banned from adsense.

Over cautious? Perhaps, but being able to run adsense on your site increases it's market value if/when you come to sell it somewhere along the line. I didn't want to have all my eggs in one basket, so I run different affiliate programs on the other sites.

Swebbie, great advice. Thanks. I guess I better get my one site working properly (more traffic, more links, etc.) before I branch off.

Swebbie, a man after my own heart. Great post too.

I have a dozen sites running adsense. It can be hard juggling content for them all, and inevitably you have stragglers from time to time.

Then a site you have ignored will suddenly produce big money clicks and suddenly you rediscover how much you love that particular subject all over again :-)
