Is the only way to figure out which are high paying ads to use trial and error and see what ads pay you more? How would you know which ads where clicked?

Also, I am new to using google adsense and I wanted to know how to customize it so I can show more relavent ads, not 'hosting' ads and such.

Thanks for your time,

First of all welcome to WebmasterWorld!

The best way to get targeted ads is to write good content. Google mainly uses the text on your page to decide which ads to display. Another good way is to take the time to read the threads in the forums of WebmasterWorld. There are many good tips to get the best out of your site.

You are saying that you see mainly hosting ads. Do you use your own domain name, or are you using a free hosting service like www.somhostingcompany.com/mydirectory/files.html? For pages where it is difficult to decide which ads to display Google displays ads based on the theme of the domain. If the domain is the domain of a hosting company you are likely to receive hosting ads.

You don't need to optimize for the best ads on top. The Google algorithm does this on its own. The best ad is not always the ad with the highest payout per click. It is the ad with the best CPM. An ad with a low payout per click but a high click through rate can be at the top position of the ad block.

My site generates an average of $0.15-$0.20 CPC (based on average impression) at the end of the day but my page eCPM is $10-$12. Those kind of rates are hard to come by, something I charged per CPM ads back before the dot com bubble burst.

I really don't give a rats arse about the individual CPC as my goal is to get people locked in to a highly topical site with highly topical ads where they may click either my content or the ads, the concept is called a CLICK TARGET RICH ENVIRONMENT.

Get it?

Got it?

Good.

Yes. Your site must be targeted by an advertiser--nothing you need to do other than allow it to happen and have a site an advertiser might pick. Please read the information on the AdSense site.
