Ads not optimized because of keywords in the url

Hi,

I am running a directory website and i have my categories listed as such:-

mysite.com/navigation/books
mysite.com/navigation/flowers
etc....

However, there is also a detailed description for each link in each category and it is generated with url as such:-

mysite.com/navigation/details/1
mysite.com/navigation/details/2

The problem is i do not have optimized ads for details pages. For example, mysite.com/navigation/details/1 is supposed to contain a detailed description on one book. But the adsense does not display any relevant books ads. Instead , all the ads are displaying like Navigation, Find a navigator, buy navigators and so on.

I am very regret that i put the word "navigation" as my subdirectory because i did not expect this to happen. I was thinking of moving the path of the directory and move it one spot up to be my root path. But i am afraid of losing ranking and visitors.

Any Comments? Should i change the path to optimize my ads? Should i add more keywords on those details pages? Should i use url filtering?

To be added:-

When google adsense bot crawled those details pages, ads will be displayed correctly sometimes but my directory is getting larger and growing fast everyday.

The bot is not coming often and it always displays unrelevant ads which i noticed i am not earning much from details pages. :<

Hi sirkei,

From my experience and what you're saying keywords in the url do matter. So have you thought of using mod_rewrite [httpd.apache.org] so that you won't lose visitors when you change the directory structure? There's some pretty smart people in the Apache forum [webmasterworld.com] who could help you out.

I tried using url filtering this morning and some ads are not displayed for folders but there are too many ads targeted for "navigation". That is really troublesome filtering all the urls using the preview tool because i cannot see some urls listed.

I am afraid to change the path because of losing ranking issue. Mod rewrite is difficult for me. And the links are generated with mod-rewrite in mind coming with the script. I have totally no idea how to mod-rewrite at all.

Using mode rewrite, php and mysql (all together) is the best way for large sites, and the best solution for your url problem. Keywords in url's are very important, not only for adsence, it's important for good ranking.

I was never looking for page rank or link partners. The last project I have startet has only 8 pages, but using the tools I have mentioned I have 50,000 pages indexed in Google. And I have published this site just 8 weeks ago.

If I think that some keywords dont work well - just change them, in the title, meta-tags, anchors and the url. Googlebot is daily visiting my server and every day I can find additional 1000 pages indexed.

By the way, my homepage is not under the top 1000 but 90% of my level 2 and 3 pages are ranking in the top 10 on their category.
